Partying for Life II Saturday August 11th
Splash - 50 W 17th Street. 7-10PM
The time has come for the Playing for Life fundraiser, to be held at Splash Bar NY THIS SATURDAY August 11th -- Partying
for Life II (at Splash Bar NY - 50 W 17th Street, New York City. 7-10PM).
New York's premiere LGBT hot-spot and the city's oldest and largest LGBT athletic organization are teaming up to present a major fundraiser on Saturday evening, August 11, 2007. Dubbed "Partying for Life II: the Cash Bash at Splash", the event will support the Big Apple Softball League's annual Central Park charity softball tournament, Playing for Life, which in turn will benefit the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBT youth.
The majority of funds contributed to PFL tournaments always go to support worthwhile charitable organizations. In fact, the last three editions have supported popular HIV/AIDS-focused causes like LifeBEAT andBroadway Cares. However, for 2007, Playing for Life organizers sought a beneficiary aimed at dealing with issues faced by the growing number of LGBT young people, and they found a worthy one in the Ali Forney Center for homeless youth. Ali Forney provides vital services for countless teens and young adults forced to seek refuge from the streets. These services include outreach, housing referrals, case management, primary medical care, HIV testing, mental health assessment and treatment, food and showers, employment assistance, safe temporary housing, and assistance to families struggling with LGBT youth.

GREETINGS FROM BIG APPLE DODGEBALL (BAD!)
|
Wazzup Future D-Ballers!
It's been a little over a month since you've heard from BAD! - but don't worry - this thing between us isn't just some summer fling...it's the real deal. You haven't heard from us much in the past month coz we've been busy putting this new Dodgeball league together...in between working full-time jobs, going on vacations, playing in volleyball tournaments, and throwin back brews at THE EAGLE and GYM BAR. So let's get everyone up to speed.
We won't bore you with details about all the necessary corporate, legal, and tax crap we've been doing in order to launch the league, let's just get to the meat:
WHERE AND WHEN WILL BAD! PLAY???
Well, a few weeks back, after meetings with principals and custodians, we were ready to announce to the world that BAD! had found a home at a great NYC public high school in Chelsea. But we soon learned, unbeknownst to the school, that the sport of Dodgeball (adults or kids) is not allowed in any of NYC's public schools. [insert "gay gasp" here]
Apparently they think it's dangerous (and...um, there was some kind of lawsuit or whatever)...well, that's why we love it!
And why you will too!
So we have started a new hunt for space - and maybe you can help. We're in the midst of reaching out to private / parochial schools, colleges, and public recreation spaces on the West Side for a place to play. But if you know of a school, or are affiliated with a school, or think you might know of a space, or just might have a good idea...drop us an email here. We'll follow up on the lead.
Once we nail down a space, we'll know when we can officially start playing. We're still aiming for a Fall launch and are expanding possible nights of play to either a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday night.
Big Apple Dodgeball...be BAD!

Why should I give a damn about sports?
An excerpt from 'The Outsports Revolution'
Why sports? Why not the opera? Or theater? Or movies? Whatšs so terrific about sports that anyone should care about them?
Although those other diversions are certainly wonderful in their own right, sports is the ultimate theater, the ultimate
reality show, the ultimate cliffhanger with an ending no one can predict. There is a myth out there that gay men do not
care about sports (many lesbians, on the other hand, are allegedly born with the sports gene instilled in them).
Although there are some truths in every stereotype, gay men can be just as fanatical about sports as their straight
brethren. The success of Outsports attests to that. This chapter, however, is designed for those men and women who
wonder what all the fuss is about.

Miracle Paddle 2007: 9-MILE and 18-MILE CHALLENGE Saturday, August 18, 2007 and September 2-16, 2007
|
New York, NY * July 30, 2007 * Miracle House announces the 3rd Annual Miracle Paddle, a spectacular and scenic fundraising event where athletes raise funds to ride the open waters on Long Islandšs East End.
Perfect for the novice athlete and outdoor enthusiast, participants can use kayaks, paddleboards, outriggers, canoes, or surf-skis in a 9-mile challenge from Lazy Point, Amagansett to Maidstone Pavilion, East Hampton. Trained athletes and the East Hampton marine patrol will ensure safe passage for all.
Ed Cashin, a well-known adventure-seeker, owner of Weekend Warriors Tours and Outfitters, and member of Miracle Housešs board of directors conceived Miracle Paddle.
"This has grown into a fantastic community event, thanks to Ed," says Miracle House Executive Director, Jesse Ramos. "Anyone with an adventurous spirit can participate and wešll be hosting a classic summer picnic afterwards to celebrate."
For more experienced athletes, there will also be an 18-mile challenge from Montauk to Block Island held later in the summer, pending the best weather conditions. Training sessions are available throughout the summer for both the 9-mile and 18-mile challenge.
All funds raised by participating athletes will go towards Miracle Housešs mission of providing housing, meals, and advocacy to caregivers and patients coming to New York City for critical medical treatment. Founded in 1990 in response to the AIDS crisis, Miracle House acknowledged the role of the caregiver as an integral role in the healing process. Expanding on that idea, today Miracle House serves caregivers and patients from around the world in medical crisis. This includes cancer treatment, clinical trials, reconstructive surgery, burn therapy, neurological disorders, as well as the original mission of supporting people living with AIDS.
